The City of Wilmington has about 120,805 residents and a median home built in 1989 (American Community Survey 2024 5-year estimates). In the ZIP code that covers most of downtown and the Historic District, the median home dates to 1958. Forest Hills and Midtown also carry mature oaks over roofs and driveways.
That older canopy brings permit questions. In the City of Wilmington, a permit is required to remove any tree in the public right-of-way, and to remove trees 4 inches or larger on residential lots over one acre, in conservation buffers, or in local historic districts (which also need a Certificate of Appropriateness). Removing a specimen tree needs Board of Adjustment approval. Fines for unpermitted removal start at $1,200 per tree. Rules change, so confirm with City Zoning (zoning@wilmingtonnc.gov, 910-254-0900) before removing a large tree. Whether the specimen-tree rule reaches small single-family lots is unconfirmed, so email Zoning before removing a large live oak or cypress. Many HOAs also require architectural approval before tree removal; check your covenants. This is general information, not legal advice. Read more in our guide to the Wilmington tree removal permit.
Hurricane Florence made landfall at Wrightsville Beach on September 14, 2018, with a 105 mph gust at the airport. Over 90% of New Hanover County lost power and more than 1.2 million cubic yards of debris was collected.
Wilmington averages 60.15 inches of rain a year (NOAA 1991–2020 normals). Coastal soils such as Leon and Murville can hold water near the surface, and NC State Extension advises against large trees where the water table is within 18 inches: shallow roots, more windthrow risk.
Citywide canopy stood at 41.4% in 2020 after a 16% loss over four years. Laurel oak, a storm-prone species, makes up about 14% of the city's public trees. Wilmington received the 2025 Tree City USA Growth Award.
If a tree is touching or near a power line, stay away and call your electric utility (Duke Energy, or your co-op). Only utility-qualified crews should work near energized lines. See hurricane tree prep and wind-resistant trees.
Typical ranges from published cost guides (2025–2026). Estimates, not quotes.

Sometimes. Inside city limits, a permit is needed for any tree in the public right-of-way, and for trees 4 inches or larger on residential lots over one acre, in conservation buffers or in local historic districts. Fines start at $1,200 per tree. Email City Zoning before removing a large live oak or cypress. This is general information, not legal advice.
Published cost guides put the Wilmington average around $695, with typical ranges from about $230–$430 for a 20-foot tree up to $900–$1,730 for an 80-foot tree. The City of Wilmington collects curbside limbs up to 4 feet long and 6 inches in diameter, up to 7 cubic yards per collection. It does not pick up palm trunks, stumps or root balls, or debris created by commercial contractors. Make sure your quote includes haul-away so you aren't left with a pile.
